Important: These quantities are approximate. Van dimensions vary between model years and specifications, while windows, doors, roof vents, furniture and your chosen installation method will affect the final requirement.

For most projects, allowing around 10% extra material for cutting, fitting and unavoidable waste is a sensible precaution.

Why Do I Need Different Types of Van Insulation?

One of the biggest mistakes in campervan insulation is expecting a single material to do everything.

Sound deadening, condensation control and thermal insulation perform different jobs.

A well-designed campervan insulation system uses several materials together:

Van body → Sound deadening → Closed-cell foam → Thermal insulation → Interior lining

Step 1: Premium Sound Blocker – Control Panel Vibration

An empty van is essentially a large metal shell.

Large sheet-metal panels can vibrate and resonate as you drive, amplifying tyre noise, road vibration and the familiar hollow sound of an unconverted panel van.

The first layer is therefore sound deadening.

How Much Sound Deadening Do I Need?

The important point is that sound deadening does not require the same coverage as thermal insulation.

You do not normally need to cover every square centimetre of the van with butyl.

Strategic placement on the large panels that actually resonate is much more efficient and avoids adding unnecessary weight.

For a medium-sized van such as a VW Transporter, Ford Transit Custom or Renault Trafic, approximately 2–3 m² is a useful planning figure.

Large panel vans will typically require around 3–5 m², depending on the level of sound treatment you want.

Step 2: Termoflex – Condensation Control and Thermal Break

Once the main resonant panels have been treated, the next challenge is condensation.

A campervan is a metal structure, and metal reacts quickly to changes in outside temperature.

When warm, moisture-laden interior air meets cold steel, condensation can form on the inside of the vehicle body.

Sleeping, breathing, cooking, drying wet clothes and simply spending time inside the van all increase humidity.

This makes the insulation layer directly against the vehicle body particularly important.

15 metres ≈ 15 m²
20 metres ≈ 20 m²
25 metres ≈ 25 m²

This is why a medium SWB van may require around 10–12 metres while a large LWB panel van can easily require 20–24 metres.

Prefer Self-Adhesive Insulation?

Termoflex XF 6 mm is particularly useful for pillars, ribs, doors and areas where installation space is restricted.

Termoflex XF 13 mm is an excellent all-round option for walls, roofs and larger body panels.

You do not necessarily need to use the same thickness throughout the van.

Step 3: Termo Wool 50 mm – Fill the Cavities

After creating the closed-cell insulation layer, the larger wall and roof cavities can be filled with thermal insulation.

Eaglefelt Termo Wool is a flexible polyester thermal insulation designed for campervans, cargo vans and motorhome conversions.

It is lightweight, flexible and easy to cut, making it particularly useful for the irregular cavities found inside vans.

When Should I Use Termo Wool 30 mm?

Not every part of a van has enough space for 50 mm insulation.

This is where Termo Wool 30 mm becomes useful.

Use the 30 mm version in:

  • shallower doors
  • narrow cavities
  • areas behind trim panels
  • restricted spaces where 50 mm would need to be excessively compressed

In many conversions, using both 50 mm and 30 mm Termo Wool is better than trying to use one thickness everywhere.

Avoid unnecessarily compressing polyester insulation. Its thermal performance relies partly on the air trapped within the fibre structure.

How Much Lining Carpet Do I Need for My Van?

This is one of the easiest materials to underestimate.

You cannot simply calculate the visible surface area of the van.

Lining carpet also requires material for:

  • wrapping edges
  • stretching around curves
  • window apertures
  • wheel arches
  • pillars
  • door openings
  • panel edges
  • cutting and trimming

Linear Metres vs Square Metres

This causes a surprising amount of confusion when ordering van lining carpet.

Insulation is normally calculated in square metres (m²).

Lining carpet is commonly ordered in linear metres (lm).

Because Eaglefelt lining carpet is 2 metres wide:

Don’t Forget the Adhesive

A good lining material still needs the right adhesive.

Vehicle interiors can become extremely hot in direct sunlight, particularly around the roof and upper body panels. A suitable high-temperature adhesive is therefore important.

A practical working guide for lining carpet is approximately:

Does a Van with Windows Need Less Insulation?

Usually, yes.

A fully glazed passenger van has less exposed metal wall area than an equivalent panel van.

However, the difference is not always as large as expected.

Windows create additional edges, recesses and trim areas, and you still need insulation and lining around them.

Unless your van has extensive factory glazing, we recommend using the figures in the table as a planning guide rather than trying to deduct the exact area of every window.

Do I Need to Insulate the Roof?

Yes, particularly if you are building a campervan for overnight or year-round use.

The roof is one of the most important areas to insulate.

During summer, direct sunlight can heat a metal van roof dramatically. In colder conditions, warm air inside the vehicle rises towards the ceiling, making an inadequately insulated roof an obvious source of heat loss.

The roof can also be an important area for condensation control.

For a full campervan conversion, include the roof when calculating both Termoflex closed-cell insulation and Termo Wool thermal insulation.

Should I Add Extra Material for Waste?

Yes.

For most DIY campervan conversions, allowing approximately 10% extra material is a sensible approach.

Vans contain a lot of awkward shapes. Wheel arches, door frames, roof transitions, ribs, pillars and corners all produce offcuts.

This is especially important with lining carpet.

Having enough material to position, stretch and trim a section correctly is much easier than trying to make an undersized offcut fit.

It is usually better to finish the conversion with a small amount left over than to discover you are one metre short halfway through the final panel.

What Is the Best Insulation System for a Campervan?

There is no single insulation material that performs every job equally well.

The most effective approach is a layered system where each material has a clear purpose.

Layer 1 – Sound Control
